I think we would all agree that this world is in a mess. Where did it all go wrong? And how do we put it right? Well, fortunately, the Hebrew Scriptures give us an answer to both those questions. It went wrong with sin. And sin began with our first parents, Adam & Eve. But putting it right? Well, that’s beyond us. We cannot ‘repair the world’, because first of all, it is us who need repairing.

But back to that miserable scene of our first parents and their miserable failure. We find God responding in Grace. He had every right to damn the whole human race and simply let the stars declare his glory. Instead He made a promise. Satan will be crushed. So…

Just asking… who is ‘he’?

It is clear that this amazing promise to messed up mankind concerns some solution to the problem; and that solution comes actually as a human being, from the woman. ‘He’ is the offspring of woman. He is a fully human being.

But wait? Does this mean than a human will defeat the devil and we can ‘repair the world’ after all?

Yes, but not just any human, one we might call a ‘Second Adam’.

The promise from God at the beginning of human history is that though Adam and Eve sinned and thereby made all of us ‘sinners’, by nature and practice, someone would come who would literally crush it! ‘He’ would crush the head of the snake. ‘

‘O loving wisdom of our God, when all was sin and shame,
A Second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came.’

So, I’m just asking. Who is he? Who is the second Adam?
